Three great things

I saw three great things today that made my Friday

1. The Orange line driver took off at one of the stations throwing everyone in our car on top of each other. Every ethnicity, gender, and age was toppled onto each other. Everything was tense for about 5 seconds until everyone started laughing. I guess nothing breaks the ice like trampling your neighbor.

2. As I was leaving the station a mother had struggled down a broken escalator carrying an enormous stroller. Her daughter was at the top of the escalator yelling for her mom. When her frazzled mother responded she said "I love you mommy". She was having a metro adventure.

3. While grabbling some pizza with my colleagues, I noticed our waiter had the DC icon tattooed on his neck. He's all district all day.

Some Vacation Favorites

I just got back from a beach vacation in Corolla, NC with my wife and kids. It was exactly what a lazy beach vacation should be. I brought Green Mars (Mars Trilogy, Book 2) for some reading material on the hammock, and Into The Wind Kirin Dragon Kite for a little stress therapy. Nothing releases stress like throwing a kite into the air and watching the ocean breeze do the work for you. For the lazy days (and to feed screaming kids), we went with Corolla Pizza. I would encourage you to carryout and get there early to sample some of the delicious brews on draft. I cooked dinner one night (steamer pot with crab, mussel and lobster) from Steamer's. It was super easy to make and it came out great. Don't leave without visiting Duck Donuts. We stopped on our way out for some chocolate glazed and they were delicious.

Nationals game tonight

Work provides the tickets for tonight's game against the Cardinals. (Club level, too fancy for this guy) I'm going to try to get there early enough for tonight's game to try out Shake Shack. It's just me and Wes tonight. He's a great age for baseball games (6) and between the cheering, snacks, and  sabermetrics, he couldn't be happier.

Managers as Social Coordinators

When I was a wee lad in college, I had the job of social coordinator for my fraternity. My duties included finding a suitable group of young ladies with whom we would enjoy a mixer before throwing our theme parties. Of course, I was also responsible for managing those theme parties both in setup, execution, and cleanup. In addition, we would schedule events outside of the late night parties like trips to art galleries, baseball games, and road trips.

Lately, I've noticed how much the role of a manager matches the role of a social coordinator. I need to put employees into groups where they can have a good time and create great work. If the team and/or working conditions are not up to par, you are going to have a dud party. These days, employee tenures are shorter than ever, and with teleworking, employees have the option to not show up at all. If the physical, or social environment at your company isn't "party ready", why would employees keep showing up? They will only show up until they catch wind of the epic blowout two blocks down.

My latest vice

I've been playing Fallout 3: Game of The Year Edition for a week now. I know I'm about 3 years behind, my corporate masters planned it like that. :( So far I've been mixing FAQs and walkthrough with random exploring and beating stuff up. It's really helping me decompress. The game has an exploration feel like GTA so it's easy to get sucked into the story. (And easy to forget to save. oops)

Enjoying the paths

I took advantage of the paths in Reston today and downloaded my work to my Kindle. It was the perfect way to enjoy a beautiful day before it gets hot again. I find the Kindle is the perfect tool for critically reviewing documents as it forces you to focus on the reading. The insight I get makes it worth adding as an extra step in any important document. The ability to carry it on the paths on a summer day is icing on the cake.

Stuck in Second Gear

So I how do I get my fantasy baseball team into shape? I'm constantly the top half of the league, but never number one. Anyone want to check it out and give me some advice?
